Recording Research

In Write Away, Elizabeth George talks about doing research and using a tape recorder to record her impressions, which she then transcribes on her laptop.

I’ve used recorders when I’ve done interviews, but I never really thought about using a recorder as if it were a notebook to do research for fiction. I might have to try this the next time I need to do research.

How do you research? Is it different for fiction than for nonfiction? What tools do you use?
